Mother Divine History

The musical, Mother Divine is based loosely on the real-life events of 1930s-era Harlem evangelist Father Divine. His exploits were front page and tabloid news in their day. Father’s claim of being God, his prohibition on sex, the problems with the law and tax authorities, his promise of immortality to followers, and his remarriage to a twenty-one year old referred to as “Mother in the Second Body,” are all factual.

In the show, death, unpaid taxes, and required vows of celibacy create mayhem at a New York mission known as The House of Heaven. After her untimely death, the first Mother Divine seeks revenge from the grave when Father Divine, her holy husband, marries a voluptous blonde who is forty years younger than she. He insists the young woman is the original Mother Divine who begged him to find her a new “worthy” body.

The First Mother Divine’s reappearance after a séance spells trouble in paradise and Lester, a bumbling tax man, gets entangled in the retribution. Their storefront utopia is filled with a cast of wacky and lovable followers all with their own stories to tell.

The actual movement, with between 500,000 and two million followers at its peak, fed the hungry and housed the homeless in Harlem and elsewhere. Controversy and legal issues forced the movement to relocate to Philadelphia where it still exists today with a few true believers waiting for Father to reappear.
