Mother Divine was a selection of the New York Musical Theatre Festival’s
2013 Next Link Project.
Mother Divine has a problem: she's just passed away
and her husband, Harlem evangelist Father Divine, has already found her younger 'reincarnation.' With a little help from bumbling taxman Lester Stufflebean, Mother Divine is dead set on proving it’s never too late for a first wife to get revenge! Everyone is chasing someone else’s secrets in this comic romp set to a rousing, Gospel-tinged score.
In her review, Ernece B. Kelly, drama critic for the New York Beacon described the work as a, “wildly entertaining two-hour show” and concluded, “This reviewer’s hope is that some wise producer options this one for Broadway!”
The show features Randy Davis (Father Divine) whose Broadway credits include All Shook Up, Peter Pan, and Guys & Dolls and additionally many national and international tours.
Mother Divine is played by Betti O., who was a national winner on Showtime at the Apollo. She has performed nationally and internationally and even recorded a hit dance chart single in Germany.
The Musical Director is New York based, Colin Welford who was Music Supervisor for The Lion King on Broadway and for eleven worldwide productions. He conducted original cast albums in Germany, Holland and Spain. He also conducted Billy Elliot on Broadway, and was Conductor and Music Director for new productions of Billy Elliot in Chicago and Toronto. As a conductor at the English National Ballet, he has led premieres of Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Coppelia, Romeo and Juliet (Prokofiev), and Giselle.
Other cast members include: Erick Carter, New York; Alanna Lovely and Megan Gill, Chicago; Candace Culcleasure, Florida; Matthew King and Katie Kalahurka, Kansas City; Mary Kate Moore, Springfield; a talented St. Joseph contingent including Thomas Delgado, Derek Thomas, Merlynn Hughes, Mert Hughes, Lauren Bergman, and Amanda Estep.
